  • Bells can trace its origins in Farnham back to 1768, making us one of the oldest law firms in the world.

  • The present-day firm of Bells is an amalgamation of several firms over the past 250 years, including the father-and-son firm of Bells, Potter Crundwell & Bridge,  Kempson Wright & Trimming, Hollest Cotterill and most recently Clifford Cowling.

  • One of our former senior partners, Owen Crundwell, was a third generation senior partner in Potter Crundwell & Bridge, following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather.

  • Our managing director is presently Dermot Burke, who joined the firm in 1989 having previously worked for Westminster law firm Lewis Silkin .

  • One of the firm's previous senior partners, Raymond Krish (coincidentally also ex-Lewis Silkin)  was the driving force behind the charity that saved the Farnham Maltings from demolition and preserved it for the town.

  • Two of our staff have been with the firm for over 50 years.

  • The firm's present offices were commissioned by Henry Potter in 1890 in South Street, the street having been recently built to access the new train station.  The building was designed by Edward Mountford, who also designed the Central Criminal Court in London, better known as the Old Bailey.  Despite its Victorian pedigree it won praise from the renowned architect Harold Falkner as "a simple example of what such a buiding should be in a Georgian town".

  • We have a large purpose-built strong-room in the basement.  Its door is made of three-inch thick steel and concrete.  Some of the deeds and documents that we store there date back to Napoleonic times. There is a persistent rumour that it is haunted...

  • We were one of the first firms of solicitors in Surrey to install a computerised back-office system.  It was state-of-the-art at the time and occupied an entire room.  It had an 80 megabyte memory and cost over £4,000 in 1976.

  • The firm holds the Conveyancing Quality Standard issued by the Law Society, denoting independently verified excellence in residential conveyancing practice.

  • The firm's sponsored charities are the Phyllis Tuckwell hospice in Farnham, and the Farnham Youth Choir.  We are very proud to be associated with both of these local organisations, which enjoy national and international recognition for their superb work.

  • Over 98% of our clients say they would recommend us to their family and friends.

  • Over 80% of our clients live in Surrey and Hampshire but we have clients all over the UK as well as some who now reside overseas.

  • We hold over 5,000 Wills in our strong-room.

  • We are previous award winners in Farnham in Bloom's 'Secret Garden' category for our beautiful courtyard garden.

  • One of our consultants, Tony Rivers, races Morgan sportscars competitively.

  • Experience counts.
